When I was young, one of my life teachers left a piece of advice with me: “Embrace not-knowing, confusion, and helplessness as our best mentors in life!” It took a long time for me to fully understand the wisdom of his words. And even longer until I transformed the essence into one of my “20 Citizen Hacks”: “Be wary of the illusion of certainty and easy solutions for ethical dilemmas! Learn to accept not-knowing, uncertainty, ambiguity! Be serene!“
Today, I am even more convinced that we as a society need this fundamental citizen skill to handle ethical dilemmas and to mediate holistic trade-offs between extreme positions sustainably. For 15 years now, the “Tetralemma” model helps me to continuously train my ambiguity tolerance and to be able to stand two (seemingly) opposing truths at the same time – intellectually and emotionally. I am happy to share my very personal “Nutshell Summary for Busy People”. 😉
I wish you for this year that you can embrace not-knowing, uncertainty, and ambiguity as valuable mentors in life.
Happy New Year 2022
PS: When I started with “New Year Think Pieces” in 2005, it was my purpose as a “bridge between people and ideas” to incite reflection on societal patterns - beyond ideological discourse routines, beyond the limitations of the own biography, and beyond personal short-term gains. Well, in the berserk environment of today, doing this seems to be more difficult than ever: Whatever one writes, it will certainly be a trigger word for at least one of the self-radicalising filter bubbles. Hence, in the unlikely event that this has happened above, please assume the best of all possibilities: Give the benefit of the doubt! 😊
